DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21066-60 is a shock absorber spring rated at 155 N/mm, 200 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Öhlins part number 21066-60
  • Measured spring rate 155 N/mm
  • Free length 200 mm
  • Inner diameter 51 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

The Numbers That Matter

At 200 mm free length and 51 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
