DescriptionThe whole story▼
6.4 newton metres at 5,150 rpm. On the first-generation MT-09 that is the answer to the one complaint everyone had about the bike — a triple that felt hollow in the middle before the throttle response was revised.
Key Features
- 6.4 Nm more at 5,150 rpm — low in the range, where this engine wanted help
- 6.9 PS more at 9,850 rpm, peak output rising from 112.4 to 119.3 PS
- 4.6 kg against the standard 8.4 kg: 3.8 kg and 45.2 per cent less
- Complete system with a carbon fibre muffler sleeve
- Removable noise insert included
- Covers the MT-09, the FZ-09 and the XSR900
- No road approval — circuit use only
Three Bikes, One Engine
Yamaha's 847 cc CP3 triple powered the MT-09 roadster, the American FZ-09 and the retro XSR900, and all three share the exhaust route. One system covers them from 2014 to 2021.
On an XSR900 the carbon sleeve reads differently than on an MT-09 — the retro bodywork sets a different expectation — but the part is the same.
Eight and a Half Kilograms of Standard System
Yamaha's original on this generation weighs 8.4 kg, most of it in the under-engine collector box that holds the catalytic converter. It is one of the heavier standard systems for a middleweight, and 3.8 kg of it comes off here.
An Insert Comes With It
A removable noise insert ships with the system. Fitted, it makes the exhaust considerably quieter — useful on a circuit with a static noise limit. Removed, the system is at its loudest. Neither state is road legal.
The Bike That Needed It Most
The 2014 MT-09 arrived with a reputation for abrupt fuelling and a soft middle, and Yamaha spent three model years refining both. An owner of an early machine gets more out of this system than an owner of a 2020 one, because there was more to fix.
Carbon, Not Titanium
Akrapovic offers this system with a carbon sleeve. Carbon is the lighter option on a muffler body and the one that reads as a modification from ten metres away — on an MT-09, a motorcycle with almost no bodywork, that visibility is much of the point.
The XSR900 Case
Yamaha's XSR900 wraps the same triple in retro bodywork with a round headlight and a flat seat. A carbon Racing Line on one is a deliberate clash of eras — modern race material on a machine styled after the 1980s — and it either works for you or it does not.
Mechanically it makes no difference. The system fits the XSR900 from 2016 exactly as it fits an MT-09.
Fitment and Compatibility
S-Y9R2-AFC covers the Yamaha MT-09 and FZ-09 from 2014 through 2021 and the XSR900 from 2016 through 2021. The 890 cc machines from 2021 onwards take a different system.
Road Approval
None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use.
