DescriptionThe whole story▼
Kawasaki added an R version to the Z1000 range for 2017, and the changes went where riders feel them most: uprated front calipers and a higher-grade rear shock than the standard bike. A stronger front brake does not call for a stronger hand. It calls for a more precise one. The Accossato EDF088, listed for the Z1000 R from 2017 to 2023, replaces the front brake lever with a CNC-machined aluminium part that works with the original master cylinder, has an adjustable span and comes in three blade lengths.
Key Features
- Front brake lever for the Kawasaki Z1000 R, listed 2017 to 2023
- Works with the original master cylinder in place of the stock lever
- Span to the grip adjustable near the pivot
- Short blade for two-finger braking in blue, gold, green, orange or silver
- Standard length approximately 138 mm in all seven colours
- Long blade in blue, gold, green and orange
- Anodised aluminium with a black hub and no folding joint
- No German ABE documented; offered for track use
Construction and Material Quality
Stiffness is what a strong brake needs from its lever. Flex or free play between the fingers and the master cylinder blurs the small changes in pressure that control a hard stop, and the EDF088 is built to leave none: blade and hub are a single CNC-machined aluminium part, with no hinge anywhere along it. Anodising then colours the metal and hardens its surface. On every version the hub, which houses the pivot and the span adjuster, is black, while the blade takes one of seven shades.
Less Force, More Finesse
With calipers like the R's, the difference between a gentle check and a firm stop lies in a short stretch of lever travel, so the task for the right hand is control rather than strength. Two habits help. The first is a progressive squeeze: take up the free travel, let the pads make contact, and only then build pressure, instead of arriving at the lever with a jab. The second is a lever that sits where the fingers can make small movements accurately, which usually means meeting them at the first joint with the hand relaxed. Many Z1000 R riders find two fingers enough for everyday braking, and the short blade is shaped for that, ending before it reaches the fingers that stay on the grip. Riders who prefer the whole hand get more room and a little extra leverage from the long blade. The standard lever of approximately 138 mm sits between the two and is the only length made in black and in red.
Fitment and Compatibility
The EDF088 appears in Accossato's catalogue for the Kawasaki Z1000 R with the years 2017 to 2023, under the version name Z 1000 R. It goes on the Z1000 R's original front master cylinder, replacing the stock blade. For the left-hand side, Accossato names the ESK750 clutch lever for this motorcycle, though for a shorter period, 2017 to 2019, and, under the Z1000 R Edition name, the ESK828 for 2017 to 2023. Colours and lengths can be chosen independently for the two levers.
Road Approval
No German ABE is on record for this brake lever, so we sell it for use on the race track.
