A wear part is only as available as the number of machines that need it. The Valico 900 DSX is a new model from a manufacturer still building its history in Europe, and one perfectly fair question about any consumable on such a bike is whether it will still be on a shelf in ten years' time. This element answers that in an unusual way: the same housing is used by eleven machines from three different manufacturers, so the part number is kept in production by a catalogue much wider than one model line. There is a second answer as well — a washable element is barely a consumable at all.

Kept alive by a wider list

Airboxes outlive model cycles. A manufacturer tools one, and it then serves several bikes over several years, sometimes across brands that buy in the same platform — which is why a filter's fitment list is often longer and older than the motorcycle in front of you. For an owner, that is quiet reassurance about supply: this is not a part tied to the fortunes of a single nameplate. The stronger reassurance is in the material. Polyester is regenerated with a line of air rather than thrown away, so the ordinary case is one purchase, not a repeat order every service.

What the fine medium costs to keep

The catch is not longevity but breathing. At 7 microns this element is rated for 560 l/m²/sec, where the standard P08 at 80 microns is rated for 5,050 — around a ninth of the air across an equal area of cloth, the widest gap in the range and a deliberate one. Retention is bought with flow, every time; a stricter medium is not a superior one, it is aimed at dirtier air. On a DSX that regularly leaves the tarmac, that aim is right. And in no version of it is this a power part: a standard 900 DSX with the PM188T12 fitted makes the same power it made before, through a finer filter.

Care and cleaning

Service is a matter of air and, occasionally, water. Held against the clean side, a compressor nozzle backs the dust out of the mat rather than pressing it home; a wash in lukewarm water with mild detergent deals with whatever remains, rinsed until it runs clear. The element then needs to dry in open air, never with a heat source and never over a flame, and it is refitted dry and untreated.
