Buying a washable element moves a job out of a workshop and gives it to whoever owns the bike, and that job has a right direction and a wrong one. Sprint Filter specifies this medium for the life of the motorcycle, but the figure carries a condition: it assumes the element is cleaned the way polyester tolerates being cleaned. Two mistakes account for most of the damage that is ever done to one, and neither of them announces itself at the time. Both are worth knowing before the airbox is opened rather than after.

Direction is half of it

Dirt is deposited on the face the incoming air meets first, and it sits there in a layer rather than distributed through the fabric. Air blown in from that same side pushes the layer into the weave, where the next attempt cannot reach it. Air held to the opposite face pushes it back out along the shortest route, which is the way it came. That is the whole reason the instruction reads from the clean side outward, and it is also why a filter that has been blown the wrong way often looks acceptable while flowing worse than it did before.

Heat is the other half

The second mistake is impatience after a wash. Polyester is a plastic fibre, and a hot-air gun, a radiator or a workshop heater will distort a weave whose spacing is the entire specification, at temperatures that never feel dangerous to a hand. Damage of that kind is not visible and not recoverable. Room air and time are the only drying method, and the element is refitted dry and untreated — no oil, no spray, nothing added. On what the medium itself can offer, be sober about it: the 15,000 l/m²/sec is drawn upon only under sustained wide-open running, and an insert filter does not make a standard XDiavel V4 stronger.

Care and cleaning

In practice the PM160S F1-85 is serviced with an air line held to the clean face and worked steadily across the surface. When a season has left a film that air will not lift, lukewarm water and a mild washing-up detergent will, rinsed until the run-off is clear, and then the drying rules above apply without exception.
