A filter has no odometer. The Voge Valico DS appears here across three model years, 2020 to 2022, and the state of its air element is decided less by distance covered than by what it has been breathing: dust off a gravel verge in August, salt spray through a wet February, weeks of pollen, then the damp still air of a garage over winter. Two machines with identical mileage can hold elements in completely different condition. The Sprint Filter CM251S answers that by being readable and washable rather than scheduled.

Kilometres are the wrong unit

Service books count distance because distance is the one thing a book can count. An intake does not work that way. A thousand kilometres behind a truck on a dry unsealed road loads a filter harder than ten thousand on clean tarmac, and a bike that hardly moves for a winter can come out of it with an element in worse shape than one ridden all season. The practical answer is not a better interval but a look. To be clear about what this part is not: a drop-in element gives a standard Valico DS no meaningful extra power. It gives you a component whose condition you can establish in two minutes and reset in ten.

Standing still is not neutral

Long parked periods are hard on paper. Damp air moves through an airbox whether the engine runs or not, and a wet, dusty panel that dries slowly is nobody's idea of a clean intake. A dry synthetic weave takes that in its stride, because washing and drying it is the intended maintenance rather than the end of its life. If the machine genuinely lives on loose ground, Sprint Filter catalogues CM251T12 for this same airbox, filtering at 7 µm and flowing 560 l/m²/sec against the P08's 80 µm and 5,050. Much finer, much slower. Neither one is the better filter; they are made for different air.

Care and cleaning

Blow the CM251S through with compressed air from the clean side outwards after a dusty stretch, and wash it when a look tells you air alone will not do it: lukewarm water, a mild detergent, then rinsing until the water comes off clear. Let it dry fully in moving air before it goes anywhere near the airbox, and keep it away from heat guns and flames. It is refitted dry and stays untreated.
