A Silencer for a Retro Bike

The Z900RS is Kawasaki's tribute to the Z1, and most aftermarket exhausts for it fail in one of two directions: either they are period pastiche with nothing modern inside, or they are race silencers that look imported from a different motorcycle.

Spark's answer is the Evo 5 — conical and elegant, in the company's description, but with an edged bottom that gives it real character. The proportions belong to a classic; the detailing does not pretend the last fifty years did not happen.

Seven Hundred Grams

The saving here is smaller than on the Z900, and that is a function of the motorcycle rather than the silencer. Kawasaki's standard Z900RS exhaust weighs 2.2 kg against the Z900's 4.1 kg — it is a lighter component to begin with.

Seven hundred grams off the tail of a retro roadster is not a performance argument, and we are not going to make one. What it changes is how the bike feels when it is being manoeuvred, which on a motorcycle used for short rides and shown off at a standstill is arguably the more relevant half.

Lateral Mounting, as Standard

The kit includes the connecting pipe for lateral mounting, so the exhaust keeps the position Kawasaki designed. That matters more on a Z900RS than on most motorcycles: the line from tank to tail to silencer is the whole design, and moving the exhaust would break it.

Because the mounting position is unchanged, the swap is reversible with the original fasteners — which is worth having on a motorcycle likely to be kept and eventually sold to someone who wants it standard.

Dark, Not Chrome

The obvious choice on a retro motorcycle is polished — and Spark does not offer it here. The Evo 5 for the Z900RS comes in dark style, which on a bike with a chromed headlight shell and polished engine covers is a deliberate contrast rather than an omission.

It works because the Z900RS is not actually a chrome motorcycle. Most of its surfaces are painted or black, and a dark silencer sits with them instead of adding a fourth reflective surface to compete with the tank.
