DescriptionThe whole story▼
Brake pads and brake discs wear together, and on a Ducati Multistrada 950 it makes sense to treat them as one system. New pads on a worn disc do not sit flat on the friction ring at first, and a new disc with glazed old pads takes a long time to bed in. For the Multistrada 950 from 2017 to 2021, including the 950 S and 950 S Touring, Accossato lists the DKS053 for the front wheel, where most of the stopping happens: a floating disc with a black carrier that, according to the maker, can take the place of the original.
Key Features
- Floating front disc for the Ducati Multistrada 950, 2017 to 2021
- Listed for the 950 S (2019 to 2021) and the 950 S Touring (2020 to 2021)
- 320 mm outer diameter, 5.5 mm thick ring
- 72 mm centre; five 8.5 mm holes on a 90 mm circle
- Black carrier
- According to Accossato, a direct replacement for the original disc
- Minimum thickness printed on the disc
- One disc per purchase; the 950 needs two at the front
Construction and Material Quality
Accossato makes the DKS053 as a two-part floating disc. Its friction ring, 320 mm in diameter and 5.5 mm thick, is held to a black carrier by rivets that give it a small amount of float. The carrier meets the hub with a 72 mm centre, and Accossato gives a 90 mm hole circle with five holes of 8.5 mm. According to Accossato, the disc reflects experience gathered in Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 and a great deal of work on the tolerances between the two parts.
Pads and Discs as a Team
A disc does not wear flat. The pads cut a shallow track into the ring, leaving a slight ridge at the outer edge and sometimes a faint pattern of grooves across the band. New pads laid onto that surface touch only on the high spots, and until they have worn to match, the brake feels soft and the pads heat unevenly. Old pads on a new disc have the opposite problem: their faces carry the imprint of the old disc and a glaze from long use.
Changing both together on the Multistrada 950 gives the brake a clean start. Fresh pads and a fresh friction ring bed in against each other, and an even transfer layer forms over the first rides. The routine is simple: new pads in the calipers, new discs on the wheel, surfaces free of grease, and a series of moderate stops before any hard use. Accossato's guidance puts the disc change at around thirty to forty thousand kilometres, or earlier if a disc is worn or scored, so plan a pad change for the same day.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DKS053 for the Multistrada 950 from 2017 to 2021, for the 950 S from 2019 to 2021 and for the 950 S Touring from 2020 to 2021. The Multistrada 950 has two front discs; replace both and tighten the bolts to the torque given by Ducati. A little movement between ring and carrier on a new floating disc is normal.
Road Approval
Accossato's DKS053 comes without a documented German ABE and without type approval, so its use is limited to the track and to competition.
