DescriptionThe whole story▼

Of all the wear parts on a Kawasaki Ninja 400, the rear brake pads are the easiest to forget. They wear slowly, they sit out of sight, and the first sign that they are finished is often a scraping noise from the back wheel. By then the disc has usually paid for the neglect. Accossato's DK271 is a fixed rear disc for the Ninja 400, listed from 2018 to 2024, made in one piece of steel, 220 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick.

Key Features

  • Fixed rear disc for the Kawasaki Ninja 400, 2018 to 2024
  • Single-piece steel disc from Accossato's off-road family
  • 220 mm outside and 100 mm inside
  • 5 mm thick; three holes of 10.5 mm on a 120 mm circle
  • Replaces the original equipment disc directly
  • Minimum working thickness printed on its face
  • Accossato floating front disc DK237 listed for 2018 to 2020
  • No German ABE on record; track use

Construction and Material Quality

Steel, according to Accossato, and one piece from the braking band to the bolt holes: the DK271 has none of the rivets and separate carrier of a floating disc. At the rear of a Ninja 400, where the braking forces are modest, that simple layout is standard practice. The disc comes from Accossato's family of fixed off-road discs and is interchangeable with the Kawasaki part. Its dimensions are 220 mm by 100 mm with a thickness of 5 mm, and Accossato gives three mounting holes of 10.5 mm on a hole circle of 120 mm.

New Pads, New Disc

When a pad wears through its friction material, its steel backing plate meets the disc directly, and a short ride is enough to cut deep grooves into the braking surface. The damaged disc then eats fresh pads quickly and never brakes evenly again. Even without that extreme, disc and pads bed into each other over time, and an old disc with a stepped profile offers new, flat pads only part of its surface to work with.

That is why it pays to think of pads and disc together. Check the rear pads of the Ninja 400 whenever you adjust the chain: with a torch you can usually see the friction material from behind or below the caliper. When the pads are down to their wear marks, measure the disc as well. If it is close to its printed minimum or scored, change both at once and bed them in together with a series of gentle stops. Brand-new pads on a worn disc, or a new disc with old glazed pads, take far longer to deliver consistent braking.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the DK271 for the Kawasaki Ninja 400 from 2018 to 2024. The DK237 floating front disc covers the bikes of 2018 to 2020, and Accossato's lever range for the Ninja 400 includes the EDF025 brake lever and the ESK025 clutch lever. Clean the hub face before fitting, and tighten the bolts to Kawasaki's specification.

Road Approval

Neither a German ABE nor a type approval is on record for this disc; it is meant for use on the track.
