Count the intake events. A single fills its cylinder once every two turns of the crank, a twin twice, and the flat six in a Gold Wing six times, evenly spaced around the cycle. At the unhurried revs this engine actually uses, those events overlap into something very close to a continuous pull. The air arriving at the element is not a series of slams separated by pauses; it is a steady draw held for hours at a time. That is an unusual condition inside an airbox, and it happens to suit a depth-loading material particularly well.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven specified at 14 µm filtration and 1,800 l/m²/sec of flow
- Particles are captured through the thickness of the fibre mat, not held on a single woven face
- Never oiled, so nothing can be lifted off the material and deposited further down the intake
- Around double the working cloth of the usual performance element
- Goes into the standard housing in the paper panel's place, with ducting and fuelling untouched
- Cleaned with compressed air and refitted; two years of Sprint Filter warranty
A steady pull fills a mat evenly
Where the draw pulses, loading concentrates wherever the airflow crowds first, and parts of the material end up doing more of the work than the rest. Where it is continuous, the load spreads across the whole face and down into the depth of the mat more uniformly. On this engine the second case is nearer the truth than on almost anything else with two wheels, and a depth medium is precisely the type that has depth to use.
Distance is what makes the case
The rest of the argument is about the road rather than the engine. A tour crosses several kinds of air in a single service interval: motorway, farmland in harvest season, a gravel car park at the end of a day, mountain roads still carrying winter grit. The finer material is the one that does not need reconsidering when the surface changes. It is bought with flow — 1,800 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard weave — and that is a swap, not a promotion. It also adds nothing to output: no drop-in element makes a standard Gold Wing stronger, and the useful claim is the smaller one about what stays outside the engine.
Care and cleaning
Use compressed air on the clean side, working outward so the load leaves the mat rather than being driven deeper into it. When a season has left more than air will move, lukewarm water and a mild detergent will clear the SM284P14; rinse until the water runs clean. Drying takes open moving air and no shortcuts — no heat gun, no radiator, no flame — and the element is refitted dry and untreated. The Sprint Filter care sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
