Everything an air filter fails to stop goes somewhere. On the CTX700N's long-stroke 670 twin, the fine mineral dust that slips through an element does not just pass over a cylinder wall on the way in — some of it is wiped down past the rings and ends up in the sump, where it stays in circulation through every bearing the oil pump feeds until the next drain carries it out. That is the quiet argument for a finer filter medium, and it is the one the Sprint Filter P14 PM181P14 answers: a dry special non-woven rated at 14 microns, where the standard P08 weave works at 80.
Key Features
- A dry special non-woven that filters down to 14 microns and is oiled at no point in its life
- 1,800 l/m²/sec where the P08 gives 5,050 — surrendered flow is what pays for the retention
- It puts up about twice the filtering area of other performance elements
- Straight into the standard airbox in place of the original: no modification, no remap, homologation intact
- Compressed air from the clean side is the routine service, and nothing is thrown away afterwards
- Two years of warranty, beginning at the date of purchase
The particles that do not stop at the bore
Hard silica particles small enough to pass a coarse medium are also small enough to be carried in the oil film, and once they are in the sump they circulate: main and rod bearings, cam journals, the oil pump itself. A finer medium does not make a CTX700N quicker. It narrows the range of particle sizes that ever get the chance to join that circuit.
What the finer weave costs, stated plainly
Filtration and flow move in opposite directions, always. A 14 micron non-woven holds back more than an 80 micron weave because it presents a tighter path, and a tighter path passes less air per square metre per second. It is a trade, not a ranking: the P14 is not a better filter than the P08, it is a filter aimed at different air. The reason the trade works here is the engine. A low-revving 670 twin ridden at part throttle for most of its life never comes close to asking for the flow a P08 has in reserve, so the reserve is not something the rider loses. What the rider gains is retention in the dust the bike actually meets. The other side of the same coin: a finer medium collects more, so it reaches the point of needing attention sooner. If your riding is mostly clean, fast, sealed road, the P08 is the more sensible balance and this is the wrong page.
Care and cleaning
Refit it dry and never oil it — the two belong together, because no Sprint Filter medium has an oiling stage. The routine work is compressed air from the clean side, worked outwards. When a gravel season or a dry summer has earned it, wash the PM181P14 in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and leave it in open air until it is dry; not with heat, not with a flame. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
