Sprint Filter makes a stricter medium than this one, and it is not listed for the R 1250 RS. Three elements are catalogued for this airbox: the standard weave, this 14-micron mat, and the racing cloth at the open end. The 7-micron medium that appears elsewhere among the boxers is drawn for the GS models only. On an RS, fine stops at fourteen microns — and there is a decent argument that fourteen is where it ought to stop on a sports tourer anyway.
Key Features
- Special dry non-woven in polyester, filtering down to 14 microns
- A published flow rate of 1,800 l/m²/sec, where the standard element is rated at 5,050
- Never oiled, so no film exists that could travel into the intake tract behind it
- About twice the working surface of other performance elements, in the standard outline
- A straight exchange for the paper panel, leaving the housing and the fuelling alone
- Washable and reusable for the life of the machine, guaranteed for two years from purchase
A range that ends before the extreme
A fitment list is a set of decisions about use. The strictest medium in the catalogue is aimed at machines expected to spend whole days in suspended dust, and no amount of enthusiasm turns a faired road bike into one of them. What an RS meets is intermittent: a dry fortnight in late summer, a stretch of roadworks, a gravel car park, the plume behind the van in front. That is the case this mat was built to answer, and it answers it without surrendering the kind of flow the extreme medium asks for.
The two numbers that are published
They are the aperture, fourteen microns, and the rated flow, 1,800 l/m²/sec against the standard weave's 5,050 — roughly a third of the air across the same area of material. Finer holds more back and lets less through; the relationship is fixed and no material escapes it, so the decision is about conditions rather than quality. The reduction could show itself at a wide throttle held high in the rev range for a long time, which is not what a loaded sports tourer does on a public road. And the honest limit belongs here as everywhere: a panel fitted inside an unmodified airbox adds no noticeable power to a standard R 1250 RS.
Care and cleaning
Nothing is consumed in servicing it. An air line held against the clean face pushes the dust back out along its entry path, the only direction that works on a non-woven material. If a season leaves a film that will not lift, tepid water and a little mild detergent take it, and the element is rinsed until the run-off stays clear. It then dries in circulating air for as long as it needs, well away from heaters and any flame, because heat is the one thing that ruins the medium outright. The PM142P14 is refitted dry; the servicing sheet sits under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the BMW R 1250 RS of 2019 to 2023, replacing the original element in the unmodified airbox. Four machines share this number — the R, the RS and the RT of the 1250 generation, plus the R 1200 GS Adventure — and the Fitment tab gives the years for each.
