A great many R15s are on their second or third owner, and the intake is the part of a used motorcycle that an inspection cannot show you. Tyres, chain, brake pads and fork seals all declare themselves; the airbox is behind bodywork, and its contents are whatever the last owner decided they were. A service book records what was invoiced, not how the machine was ridden. The Sprint Filter P08 PM198S is a straightforward way to close that particular unknown on a bike you have just bought: one element in, and from that day the state of the intake is something you know rather than something you inherited.
Key Features
- Never oiled, and dry from the first kilometre — no film from the P08 medium reaches the intake sensors
- 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow, filtered at 80 microns
- The area doing the filtering is roughly twice that of other performance filters
- Original out, element in: the standard airbox unmodified, the map untouched, the homologation unchanged
- Washable and reusable, restored with compressed air rather than replaced
- Two years of warranty cover, beginning at purchase
Ten model years of the same airbox
The R15 V3.0 has been built since 2017, long enough for a machine to pass through several hands and for its maintenance history to become approximate. What has not changed in that time is the airbox: one part number covers the whole run, and the 125 and 155 machines built around the same box as well. Ordering by the code rather than by the year removes the guesswork.
What a loaded element actually does
A filter that is quietly closing up does not announce itself. What it produces is a slow rise in intake resistance and, with it, a throttle response a little softer than it was. The dry P08 answers that because it can be restored rather than merely renewed: woven polyester spun from threads of 22 microns and upwards, blown clean with compressed air. Sprint Filter measured a four-layer oiled cotton filter retaining 76.42 per cent of 100-micron test particles against 93.13 per cent for the dry P08 — and unlike oiled gauze, the P08 carries nothing that can end up on a sensor. Finer weaves exist for dust and extremes, the P14 at 14 microns and the T12 at 7, but each costs flow: 5,050 litres per square metre per second for the P08, 1,800 and 560 for the others. That is a trade, not a ranking.
Care and cleaning
Air first, water only if the air was not enough: the element is blown through from the clean side outwards, then washed in lukewarm water with a mild detergent when it needs it, rinsed until the water runs clear. Drying is the part people rush — it has to be complete, in open air, and it must never involve heat or a flame. Refit it dry. No oiling step exists. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha YZF R15 V3.0, 2017 to 2026, and a direct replacement in the standard airbox. The same PM198S element serves seven machines built around this airbox, across the 125 and 155 versions of the engine; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
