Finer fabrics exist and they pass less air — a trade, never a ranking — and a sport-tourer belongs squarely on the road side of it. The rating being per square metre is also why surface counts: this element folds close to twice the filtering cloth of other performance filters into the frame BMW's airbox already accepts. Aim the air at the side that faces the engine and work outward, so the deposit is pushed back through the face that caught it. Drying is unhurried and cold: no heat source of any kind, no flame, and nothing refitted while damp.
