DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-30 is a shock absorber spring rated at 41 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Measured spring rate 41 N/mm
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 97 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 60281-30
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Powder-coated black

Manufacture and Tolerance

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time.

The Numbers That Matter

Öhlins holds the free length at 180 mm and the inner diameter at 46 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Choosing 41 N/mm

A mid rate balances support under braking against compliance over the surface, which is why it is the usual starting point. A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Installation

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
