mt-helmets-cosmo-sv-zafiro-c16-matt-green-red-helmet
MT-Helmets Cosmo SV Zafiro C16 Jet Helmet – Matt Green / Red

Deep bottle green is not a colour the helmet industry paints very often. Zafiro C16 does — a dark, slightly blue-shifted green over the crown and rear, cut by broad scarlet panels at the brow and along the lower edge. On a jet, where the shell is most of what anyone sees, that decision matters more than it would on a full-face.

About the Zafiro C16 finish

The base is a dark green, matt, with a fine pinstripe outline tracing the panel edges and a faint geometric pattern worked into the crown. The red sits in two places: a wedge across the front above the visor aperture, and a second field wrapping the lower rear. Vent trims and the visor mechanism cover are gloss black; the MT wordmark sits small on the side in the shell tone.

Green and red at full saturation would fight each other. They do not here because the green is dark enough to read almost as a neutral — it behaves like a very deep grey until light hits it directly, and then it turns green. That is a deliberate piece of paint engineering, not an accident of the swatch.

The rear deflector nobody mentions

The Cosmo SV carries a removable rear deflector that comes off without tools. It is the least-discussed part of this helmet and one of the more useful.

On an open-face, air does not only enter at the front. At speed a low-pressure zone forms behind the shell and pulls air up the back of the neck — the reason a jet can feel draughty in a way a full-face never does. The deflector interrupts that. Leave it on for autumn and motorway stretches; take it off in July when you actively want the airflow. Two seconds, no screwdriver.

Three intakes and a rear exhaust

Ventilation is three front intakes with a rear exhaust, and MT paints the vent pieces in the final shell colour rather than leaving them in raw black plastic — a detail normally reserved for helmets costing considerably more.

On a jet, the aperture cools your face for free. The vent system exists for the crown, which is where an open-face gets hot: stationary in traffic on a summer afternoon, with no airflow at all. The rear exhaust is the half people forget. Air only moves through a helmet that has somewhere to let it out.

ECE 22.06 — and what MT tested it with

The current European standard, mandatory since January 2024, is a real step up from the 22.05 it replaced: 18 impact points instead of five, several impact speeds, an oblique impact against an abrasive anvil to measure rotational loading, and a Brain Injury Criterion limit.

MT states the Cosmo SV was homologated with its accessories fitted, including the UCS MT-Rider Sync intercom. That is worth knowing: an intercom changes the mass distribution and the surface of a helmet, and a homologation obtained on the bare shell says nothing about the helmet you will actually ride in. The Cosmo SV additionally carries DOT.

The sun visor

An MT-ESP drop-down sun visor is built in — Extended Sunvisor Protection, MT's own designation for a shade cut deeper than the class norm.

On a jet this is the single feature that changes daily use most. An open-face has no brow, no peak and nothing to hide behind, so low sun goes straight into your eyes. A built-in shade means one helmet covers the whole day instead of two visors and a pocket to keep the spare in.

MT-QVSS visor change

The visor comes off and goes back on without tools, on MT's patented MT-QVSS mechanism. The screen itself is the MT-V-37, a long, extended visor in impact-resistant material — the part that gives this helmet its face.

Smoked and mirrored versions are sold separately. Neither is in the box; the clear screen is fitted.

Noise, honestly

An open-face is louder than a full-face. There is no chin bar to break up the flow, the aperture is a large opening at exactly the height of your ears, and no amount of engineering changes that geometry.

We would not sell you a jet as a quiet helmet. What we will say is that the Cosmo's deflector and the fit of its shell keep it towards the calmer end of the class, and that on the roads a jet belongs on — town, short trips, moderate speed — noise is not the problem it becomes at 130 km/h.

Interior and retention

The lining is removable and washable. The closure is MT-Micrometric+, a ratchet with a guaranteed two-tooth minimum anchorage — MT's answer to the classic ratchet objection, that a strap done up on a single tooth can walk loose.

Wash the lining a few times a season rather than once a year. A jet's interior takes more sweat than a full-face's simply because there is less of it.

Repairable by design

MT builds the Cosmo SV under what they call EcoConscious: every component is meant to come off and be replaced individually. In practice that means a broken vent trim or a torn cheek pad is a part order rather than a new helmet.

That is worth more on a helmet in this class than it sounds. A €150 helmet written off by a €12 part is a bad outcome for everyone.

What it does not have

No chin bar. In a frontal impact the jaw is unprotected. That is the jet category, not a fault of this helmet — but if your riding is fast road and motorway, buy a full-face.

No independent safety rating. SHARP does not test open-face helmets, so no star rating exists for the Cosmo SV, and there is no ADAC or Snell result. Untested is not the same as badly rated.

No Pinlock. The MT-V-37 is not a Pinlock-prepared screen.

Tinted visor not included.
