The Pikes Peak carries the name of a hill climb that finishes above 4,300 metres, and although almost none of them will ever run it, the association is a useful way into a real question: what happens to the intake side when the air itself gets thinner, and how much does the filter's flow rating matter then?
Key Features
- Dry non-woven medium — never oiled, so there is nothing to wash out and nothing to re-apply
- Filtration down to 14 microns, against 80 microns for the standard P08
- Air flow 1,800 l/m²/sec — the price finer retention costs, and the reason this is a choice rather than an upgrade
- Direct replacement in the standard airbox — no modification, no remap
- Washable and reusable; compressed air from the clean side restores it
- Two-year warranty from the date of purchase
Thin air makes restriction count for more
At altitude an engine has less oxygen per litre of air, and everything that stands between the atmosphere and the throttle bodies is working against a smaller margin. This is the one argument that genuinely favours the freer-flowing standard P08 at 5,050 litres per square metre per second over this element at 1,800 — and it deserves stating rather than hiding, because a page that only lists reasons to buy is not much use to anyone.
Why most Pikes Peak owners should still consider it
The counter-argument is simply where these motorcycles actually spend their lives: European passes, not Colorado. Alpine roads in summer are dry, dusty and busy, and the fine particulate on them is exactly what a 14-micron medium catches and an 80-micron one does not. Unless you are genuinely riding above three thousand metres with any regularity, the retention is worth more to the engine than the flow reserve is — a 1200 cc twin at road speeds is nowhere near asking the airbox for everything it has. The medium is dry non-woven, never oiled, cleaned with compressed air from the clean side.
Care and cleaning
Blow it through from the clean side with compressed air, working outwards — a non-woven medium releases dust readily and needs nothing else in normal use. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and let it dry fully in air; never with heat, never with a flame. Refit it dry. There is no oiling step and never has been. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
