Filtration only applies to air that goes through the cloth. Whatever slips around the edge of an element arrives inside unfiltered, whatever the rating on the box says. It is worth saying here in particular: the argument for a washable element is that the airbox gets opened again and again — and that joint is precisely where the mistake is made. PM93S is pressed to the shape of the original panel so that it beds and seals the way the part it replaces did.
Key Features
- Straight exchange for the paper panel in the standard airbox: no cutting, no repositioning, no remap
- Dry polyester weave, supplied unoiled and refitted unoiled after every clean
- 80 µm at a rated 5,050 l/m²/sec, the standard medium of the range for road and track use
- Measured retention of 93.13 % on 100-micron particles, against 76.42 % for four-layer oiled cotton
- Roughly twice the working cloth of a typical performance element within the same frame
- Cleaned with an air line rather than replaced, specified for the service life, two-year guarantee
The joint does as much work as the medium
Bed the element square in its recess, check that the sealing lip is folded nowhere, and bring the lid down evenly on its fasteners instead of pulling one corner tight first. None of that is exotic and all of it is easy to lose at the end of a long evening. Refitting dry belongs on the same list: a damp element is soft, takes a set it should not have, and carries moisture into the tract. Nothing is sprayed on afterwards either, so there is nothing that can travel downstream onto sensors.
Two windows in the catalogue
The list carries the HP4 Race twice, under 2013 to 2014 and again under 2017 to 2018, and this listing is written against the later pair. The other entries under the same number are road machines: the first-generation S 1000 RR up to 2018 and the S 1000 XR up to 2019. That upper edge is the whole of the ordering question, because from 2019 the S 1000 RR moved to another housing and another part number, and from 2020 the XR did the same. Nothing here reaches those machines. Nor does it promise more than an element can deliver: in an unmodified airbox it does not make a standard motorcycle noticeably stronger.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air does the routine work. Direct the line at the clean side of the PM93S and drive the load back out the way it came in, without dwelling on one patch. Where a film survives that, lukewarm water with a mild washing-up detergent will lift it; rinse until nothing further comes away. Then let it dry in open air, since heat guns, radiators and flames are what destroy the medium. It is refitted dry. Two years of guarantee run from the purchase date, and the maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Specified against the airbox of the BMW HP4 Race as the catalogue lists it for 2017 and 2018. Seven machines are covered altogether: the S 1000 RR of 2009 to 2012 and of 2010 to 2018, the S 1000 RR HP4, the HP4 Race in its earlier window, the S 1000 XR of 2015 to 2019 and the Bimota BB3.
