How Öhlins Makes Them
Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.

A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.
Applications
Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. This is a service part in the proper sense — it wears, it settles, and replacing it restores what the suspension was designed to do.
Installation
Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
