A Design That Has Not Dated
Massimo Tamburini drew the F4 after the Ducati 916, and twenty-five years later it still looks contemporary. The Guggenheim has exhibited one as industrial design, which is not something that can be said of many production motorcycles.
The One Ordinary Component
Everything visible on an F4 was drawn rather than merely specified. The cast throttle housing with its clipped-on cover is among the few parts that read as ordinary production, and it sits directly in the rider's eyeline.
Radial Valves, High Revs
The four-cylinder engine uses a radial valve arrangement and spins beyond thirteen thousand. It is expensive to maintain, complicated to work on and produces a noise that owners consider adequate compensation for both.
Housing and Switch Together
MV integrated the right-hand controls into the throttle assembly, so a worn contact means the complete component. This unit replaces both from a single billet, plugged into MV's own connector with no wiring change.
Tight Behind the Fairing
The F4's bodywork was drawn for aerodynamics rather than for access, and there is very little room around the clip-ons. A compact machined body takes less of that space than a casting with a cover over it.
Reversible
The standard assembly refits at any point using the same connector. On a motorcycle valued substantially for its originality, that is the property that makes the change worth considering.
A Cockpit That Was Drawn
The F4's mirrors, instruments and controls were all designed as part of the motorcycle rather than selected from a catalogue. That makes the one component which was selected from a catalogue rather conspicuous once it has been noticed.
