Semi-Active Öhlins
The S carried electronically managed suspension that adjusted continuously from the inertial platform. On a 205 hp twin with a short wheelbase, the load moves faster than any fixed setting can follow.
Two Hundred and Five Horsepower
From 1285 cc, which remains an extraordinary specific output for a two-cylinder engine. Ducati found it by lengthening the Superquadro's stroke rather than by chasing revs any further.
Forged Wheels and Stylema Calipers
The later S bikes carried Brembo's lighter monobloc caliper and forged Marchesini rims. Ducati specified the S comprehensively and left almost nothing obvious to improve.
Throttle Assembly Only
The switch block stays where it is. This is the housing on its own, for owners whose switchgear is sound and who simply want the moulded plastic gone from the right-hand bar.
Cut Rather Than Moulded
The bore the throttle tube runs in is machined, which keeps the rotation smooth and concentric far longer than an injection-moulded equivalent manages.
Black Anodising
One finish converted into the surface. Against red bodywork and gold suspension, it is the option that draws no attention at all.
Ergal 7075
A zinc-bearing aerospace grade with roughly double the yield strength of the alloys used in most machined accessories. It is harder to cut and it holds a clamping face indefinitely.
The Twin's Farewell
The 1299 S was the last and best of Ducati's V-twin superbikes. The V4 that replaced it is faster and easier, and a good many people still prefer this one.
Desmodromic, Still
Ducati closes its valves mechanically rather than with springs, which is why the Superquadro can use valves this large and still rev. No other manufacturer has considered it worth the complexity for decades, and Ducati has never seriously considered abandoning it.
