A Hundred and Fifty Horsepower on a Twenty-One Inch Front
KTM took the most powerful adventure bike of its era and gave it a 21 inch spoked front wheel, longer-travel WP suspension and off-road tyres. The result asks a great deal of its rider and rewards competence in a way very few large machines do.
Offroad Mode
The setting cuts power to 100 hp and permits substantial rear wheel slip, which is what makes a bike this heavy rideable on gravel at all. It is selected from the left cluster and used constantly on mixed terrain.
The ABS Control
On a machine of this weight, being able to disable the rear ABS is the difference between steering with the back wheel and fighting the electronics. It is operated with a gloved thumb, often while moving, and it must register first time.
Standing Changes Everything
The R's ergonomics assume the pegs over rough ground, which brings the hand to the bar from above rather than behind. Controls laid out for a seated rider sit at a different angle, and machined relief works from either.
It Falls at Walking Pace
A fully fuelled 1190 Adventure R goes over on loose surfaces, repeatedly across a long trip. The bar end lands first every time, and a milled Ergal body deforms where a clipped moulded shell splits at its clamp.
Dust Sealing
Sealed elements inside a one-piece machined body. Fine grit is what ends switchgear on a bike used this way, and there is no moulded joint anywhere for it to work into.
Black Anodised
A single finish, through the surface. It dulls with contact instead of flaking, which on a working motorcycle laid down more than once is the property that matters.
