The Busy Side
Indicators, headlight and eight levels of traction, all reached from here. On a naked bike ridden on roads rather than at circuits, this block carries the workload.
Twelve Summers of Printing
Ducati's legends are applied to the moulded surface and on a bike this age they have usually gone entirely. The switches still work and nobody can read what they do.
Warm, Then Cold
The bar area on an L-twin cycles through a wide temperature range every single ride. Plastics take a set under that and machined aluminium simply does not.
Two Halves, One Clip
The original is moulded in pieces held together with snap fittings. After twelve years of a big twin's vibration they no longer hold as tightly as they once did.
Colour With Depth
Anodising penetrates the aluminium rather than covering it. A scratch reveals more coloured metal, which on a decade-old motorcycle is why these parts still look right.
Back to Original in Twenty Minutes
The harness is never cut, so the standard block returns whenever it is wanted. On a bike this old, keeping the wiring untouched is worth doing.
The Usable Streetfighter
The 1098-based version that preceded it was magnificent and close to unmanageable. The 848 gave up power nobody could use and became a motorcycle people actually rode.
A Hundred and Thirty-Two Horsepower
From the 849 cc Testastretta 11 degree engine, behind a wide handlebar with no bodywork. It remains one of the better-looking motorcycles Ducati has built.
Eight Levels of Traction
On a naked middleweight in 2012. Ducati was fitting genuinely useful electronics to bikes below the flagship before most of the industry had decided they were necessary.
