Six Hundred and Forty-Nine Cubic Centimetres
The ER-6 parallel twin in a tall chassis with long travel. It has been Kawasaki's sensible middleweight for the better part of two decades.
Sixty-Nine Horsepower
Enough to be genuinely quick on a road and modest enough to be forgiving. The Versys 650 has never needed more.
Original Fastener Positions
The cover picks up the threads the housing used, at the figures Kawasaki specifies for them. No hole is opened out and no thread in the head is touched.
What Leaves the Engine
Four items leave the motorcycle: the reed box, the line running forward to the intake, the clips along it and the fasteners underneath. What remains is a cylinder head with a flat cover on it.
On a Naked Kawasaki
Kawasaki leaves the motor exposed on the naked models, so whatever is bolted to it is part of the design whether it was meant to be or not. A turned cover belongs there in a way a blanked-off pipe never does.
Aluminium Against Aluminium
Nothing clamps metal onto metal here. A rubber ring in a turned groove takes up the joint, which is why the head face is untouched after the tenth removal as much as after the first.
Refit for an Inspection
Where periodic testing covers the equipment, the standard housing goes back on in twenty minutes with nothing needing replacement.
Heat, Not Distance
A garage queen's reeds age at the same rate as a courier's, because it is the warm-up cycles rather than the kilometres that finish them.
Bought to Be Used
The Versys 650 sells to commuters and long-distance riders rather than to anybody chasing a specification, and those owners tend to keep them for years. Maintenance-reducing changes therefore matter more here than performance ones.

Enough for a real four hundred kilometres, which is what makes the Versys 650 usable for the touring its owners actually do rather than the touring they imagine.

Kawasaki asked the 649 cc engine to commute, tour and occasionally be ridden quickly, and it manages all three without being especially good at any of them. That breadth is the whole appeal, and it means these bikes accumulate mileage rather than modifications.
