Eleven Hundred and Ninety-Eight Cubic Centimetres
The first Superquadro, making a hundred and ninety-five horsepower from two cylinders. In 2012 that was an extraordinary figure and it still reads well.
The Reed Assembly
A moulded housing holding one reed per port, bolted to the cylinder head and fed by a hose from the airbox. It is the half that physically admits the air.
A Cracked Reed's Signature
Soot inside the airbox and an element discoloured well before its interval. It is almost always found while chasing something entirely unrelated.
The Complete Mechanical Picture
Airbox, hose, reed assembly and cylinder head port, in that order. The cover closes the last of those and the airbox end needs its own answer.
Why the Housing Fails
It is a moulding bolted directly to a cylinder head, living through the widest temperature range on the motorcycle several times a day. The reeds flex on every closed throttle and eventually one cracks.
The Reeds Are Not Serviceable
Ducati supplies the housing complete. A cracked reed means a new assembly, which is part of why owners choose aluminium instead.
What the Housing Is and Why It Ages
A moulded box of reed valves bolted directly to a cylinder head, admitting air into the exhaust ports and preventing it travelling back the other way. It lives through the widest temperature range on the motorcycle several times a day, and the reeds inside flex on every closed throttle. They crack with age and heat cycles rather than with distance ridden.
What the Ports Look Like Underneath
Two small drillings into the exhaust side of the head, machined flat around their edges so a seal can work. There is nothing delicate about them and nothing that needs protecting, but they should be wiped clean before the cover goes on, because a piece of grit under an O-ring is the one way this job leaks.
