DescriptionThe whole story

Two noise inserts come in the box rather than one. That is not a detail Akrapovic mentions often, and it tells you what this system is for: a machine that has to pass a static test at one circuit on Saturday and a different limit somewhere else on Sunday.

Key Features

  • 5.16 kg against a standard 7 — a quarter of the weight gone
  • 116.2 PS, four and a half horsepower above standard
  • 90.2 Nm, with the largest gain measured low at 5,000 rpm
  • Muffler exits on the right, following the Supersport works bikes
  • Two different noise inserts supplied
  • No catalytic converter and no pre-muffler; remapping is mandatory
  • Closed course competition use only

The Right-Hand Exit

Yamaha routes the R9's standard exhaust underneath. Akrapovic brings this one out on the right side of the machine, the way the Supersport bikes run, and supplies an aluminium bracket to carry it. The look is deliberate and so is the packaging: with nothing slung under the engine, the lean angle and the ground clearance both improve.

The design follows the systems Akrapovic builds for the R6, the R7 and the R1, which is a family resemblance a paddock recognises.

Nothing Left in the Middle

This system has no catalytic converter and no pre-muffler. Both are gone, not relocated, and that is where most of the 1.84 kg saving and all of the noise increase come from. Static noise rises from 95.5 dB to 103.2 at 6,500 rpm.

Removing the pre-muffler changes what the engine sees badly enough that Akrapovic calls remapping mandatory rather than advisable. The bike will run without it and will run poorly.

Two Inserts, One System

Akrapovic notes that two different noise inserts are offered with the product. Circuits set their static limits independently — 95, 98, 102 dB are all in use somewhere — and a system that can be brought to two different readings gets into more paddocks than one that cannot.

Where the R9 Sits

Yamaha's CP3 triple in a supersport frame, 890 cc, around 119 PS standard. The R9 is new enough that the aftermarket is still filling in, and Akrapovic covers it three ways: the Evolution Line S-Y9E1-EET, this Racing Line, and the track day link pipe L-Y9R1/TD that lowers the noise of either.

The Racing Line is the middle option. Titanium where it shows and where it saves weight, stainless steel for the headers and the link pipe, and a price a long way below the full titanium system.

Four and a Half Horsepower

111.8 PS standard to 116.2, with the increase recorded at 9,500 rpm. Torque goes from 88 Nm to 90.2, and Akrapovic places the largest torque gain at 5,000 rpm — low, in the part of the range a triple pulls from, which is why the CP3 engine suits a road-course circuit as well as it does.

An Hour and a Dyno Session

Sixty minutes to fit. The remap afterwards is the part that takes the time and the money, and no honest quote leaves it out.

Road Approval

None. This product does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or highway use. For closed course competition only.
