DescriptionThe whole story▼
The Yamaha XJ6 is an easy-going middleweight, and many examples are used as everyday transport: to work and back, through traffic, in weather that keeps other bikes in the garage. Brakes on a commuter lead a harder life than the mileage suggests, with countless short stops, road grime and water thrown up from wet tarmac. Accossato's DK077 is an Elite-line floating front disc listed for the XJ6 from 2009 to 2016. Its black carrier holds a 298 mm friction ring, and each rivet carries the Accossato logo.
Key Features
- Floating front disc from the Elite line for the Yamaha XJ6, 2009 to 2016
- Listed for the XJ6-N, XJ6 Diversion and Diversion F, with and without ABS
- 298 mm outside, 132 mm inside diameter
- 5 mm thick, equal to the original disc according to Accossato
- Black carrier, Accossato logo on the rivets
- Minimum thickness printed on the disc
- Price per disc; the XJ6 has two front discs
- No German ABE documented; for track use
Construction and Material Quality
The DK077 belongs to Accossato's Elite line. It is a floating design, so the 298 mm friction ring and the black carrier are separate parts, joined by rivets that each bear the Accossato logo. According to the manufacturer, the disc has the same 5 mm thickness as the original, and the carrier opens to 132 mm at its centre. Accossato explains that part of the braking force of its discs comes from careful work on the clearance between carrier and ring, knowledge it says was gathered in Superbike and in the Moto2 and Moto3 classes.
Commuting Through the Wet Months
Water is the first thing a commuter learns about. On a wet morning the pads of an XJ6 have to wipe a film of water off the discs before they bite properly, so the first touch of the lever brings less than expected for a moment. Riders used to this give the brakes a light squeeze well before the first junction and leave more room to the car in front. Spray from the road also carries fine grit, and in winter often salt, which settles on the discs, the calipers and the edges of the pads. Left there, it speeds up wear and can make the pads drag or squeal.
A few habits keep the front of an XJ6 in good order through the wet months. Rinse the brakes with plain water after salty rides and let the bike dry before you cover it. Keep cleaning sprays and polish well away from discs and pads, because even a trace on the pad surface reduces grip for a long time. Look at the pads every few weeks rather than once a season, since stop-and-go riding wears them faster than touring does. When one disc is due, measure the other as well: both usually wear at a similar rate, so replace them together if both are close to the printed minimum.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the DK077 for the XJ6 from 2009 to 2016, covering the naked XJ6-N, including the SP of 2013, the half-faired Diversion and the fully faired Diversion F, each with and without ABS. The XJ6 brakes with two front discs and the price here is for one, so a full change needs two. For the same bikes Accossato also offers the DKS073, a floating disc outside the Elite line. Fit new pads with new discs and let them bed in over a series of moderate stops.
Road Approval
This disc has no German ABE, and no type approval is documented. For that reason we sell it for use on closed circuits.
Scope of Delivery
One DK077 Elite disc with black carrier; each side of the XJ6 needs its own.
