Where the range stops for this machine

An option that is missing from a catalogue is information, not an oversight. The extreme medium exists for this housing and is simply not listed against the faired machine, which fits the shape of the thing: a road-going sports motorcycle is not where anyone would specify a desert filter, and the flow it would surrender is severe. So the choice on an RC R is genuinely three-way — the racing weave, the standard weave, and this one at the fine end — and there is nothing further down to wonder about.

What the fine end costs

Retention and flow move against each other, always. Passing 1,800 l/m²/sec where the standard element passes 5,050 is the price of the finer rating, paid on every ride whether or not the air deserves it. That makes this a conditional recommendation rather than an upgrade: it is right where the roads are dusty and wrong where they are not. And in neither case does it make a standard 990 RC R quicker, because a replacement element in an unmodified airbox never has.

Care and cleaning

Hold an air line to the clean face of the PM175P14 and work outward, so the load leaves through the surface that collected it. Where dry air is not enough, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will lift the rest, rinsed until the water comes away clean.
