Sprint Filter P08 Air Filter for Road & Track – Kawasaki Z400 (2018–2026) PM164S

The Z400 is a naked bike, and naked bikes get used. No fairing to hide behind means it tends to be bought by people who ride in the weather rather than around it — commuting through a wet autumn, through a salted winter, through the grit that a wet road throws up for months at a time. All of that arrives at the airbox as damp, dirty air, and it arrives every day rather than on the few dry weekends a season allows. The Sprint Filter P08 PM164S is a dry polyester element for the standard airbox, and its relationship with a bad winter is different from a paper element's.

Damp is what finishes a paper element

Pressed cellulose is a mat of fibres held together by a resin, and repeated cycles of damp and dry are hard on it. Long before it is visibly dirty, a winter element can carry moisture and fine road grime deep into the medium, where it stays. A polyester weave takes the same winter and gives it back. Warm water, a mild detergent, a rinse until the water runs clear, then a full air dry — and the element is at its own baseline again rather than one winter further from it.

A spring service that needs no parts order

The useful consequence is timing. Cleaning an element is something you decide to do on the morning you have the bike apart; ordering one is something you decide a week earlier, and often do not. Riders who service their own machines know how many small maintenance jobs quietly get postponed for exactly that reason. With the P08 there is nothing to wait for. Sprint Filter designs it to last the life of the motorcycle, which on a Z400 kept through several winters means the intake gets attention on the schedule the bike deserves rather than the schedule a parts delivery allows.

Care and cleaning

Heat and a naked flame will destroy this element, so neither is ever used to dry it; dirt, by comparison, is easy. Compressed air from the clean side, directed outwards, handles the routine; lukewarm water with a mild detergent and a rinse until the water runs clear handles a winter.
