DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-26 is a shock absorber spring rated at 85 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • 94 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 01096-26
  • Measured spring rate 85 N/mm
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 190 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

What Fitting Involves

The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
