DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60281-37 is a shock absorber spring rated at 45 N/mm, 125 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 70 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 125 mm
  • Measured spring rate 45 N/mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated black
  • Öhlins part number 60281-37

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.

The Numbers That Matter

At 125 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio.

Applications

A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
