DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-29 is a shock absorber spring rated at 35 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 240 mm
  • 123 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00180-29
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 35 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

Why the Rate Holds

Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 240 mm, inner diameter 46 mm, rate 35 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

Lighter riders usually end up a step or two below the factory rate once sag is measured properly. Comfort and grip come from the spring moving early; this is the end of the range where that happens. On a machine ridden solo and mostly on the road, softer is often the honest choice. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
