DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00480-23 is a shock absorber spring rated at 20.3-28.6 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 230 mm
  • Measured spring rate 20.3-28.6 N/mm (progressive)
  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • 130 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00480-23
  • Powder-coated black

How Öhlins Makes Them

Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 230 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 20.3-28.6 N/mm.

What the Rear Spring Decides

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

The springs come powder-coated and need no preparation before they go in. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
