DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21141-39 is a shock absorber spring rated at 110 N/mm, 175 mm long with a 51 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Free length 175 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 110 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 21141-39
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 83 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 51 mm

Manufacture and Tolerance

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 51 mm × 175 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 110 N/mm.

What This Rate Does

Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
