DescriptionThe whole story▼
Many long trips on a Tracer 900 begin with a ferry, across the Channel, to Scandinavia or to an island in the Mediterranean. The crossing itself is relaxing; getting on and off the ship is not. Steel ramps, wet decks and tight spaces between cars and lorries all have to be negotiated slowly on a loaded bike, with the clutch doing most of the work. The Accossato ESY688 is a CNC-machined aluminium clutch lever for the Tracer 900 of 2015 to 2017, the years of the early MT-09 Tracer, with adjustable reach.
Key Features
- Clutch lever for the MT-09 Tracer and Tracer 900, listed 2015 to 2017
- Fits the original clutch mounting
- Adjustable distance to the grip
- Standard blade approximately 138 mm; short and long in selected colours
- CNC-machined aluminium, anodised
- Black hub, choice of seven blade colours
- Rigid construction, no hinge
- In its own Accossato box
Construction and Material Quality
The ESY688 is machined from aluminium and then anodised. Accossato keeps the hub, with pivot and adjuster, in black and colours the blade in one of seven shades. Anodising makes the coloured layer part of the metal, which is useful on a lever that spends its journeys exposed to spray, sea air and rain. The design is fixed, one piece from the pivot to the end of the blade, with no folding joint.
Ferry Ramps and Car Decks
Boarding a ferry on a motorcycle follows a familiar pattern. You wait in a lane with the engine off, then follow the crew's directions up a ramp that is often steep and slippery, and finally creep along the car deck to the spot where the bike will be strapped down. All of that happens at walking pace or slower, with luggage on board and sometimes a crew member signalling you to stop halfway up. Holding the clutch at the friction point while balancing a heavy Tracer is much easier when the lever sits close to your fingers. Adjust the reach before the trip so that you can cover and slip the clutch with a relaxed hand, and choose the long blade if you want a lighter pull. On the ramp itself, keep the bike in first gear, look where you want to go rather than down at the deck, and control the speed with the rear brake so that the front wheel is never braked on wet steel. Leaving the ship is the same in reverse, often downhill, and needs the same calm left hand.
Fitment and Compatibility
This lever is listed by Accossato for the Tracer 900 of 2015 to 2017, including the bikes it names MT-09 Tracer. For the same years, and on to 2020, Accossato also lists the ESV004 clutch lever, so compare both products with the lever currently on your bike before you decide. The front brake of every Tracer 900 from 2015 to 2020 is covered by the EDF016.
Road Approval
The ESY688 is sold for the track, because it has no documented German ABE.
