Sprint Filter publishes a retention figure for some of its media and not for others. The P08 weave is quoted at 93.13 per cent and the racing F1-85 at 95.22, both measured against 100-micron test particles. For the P14 no such number is published, and this page will not invent one. What is stated is the aperture, 14 microns, and the flow, 1,800 l/m²/sec — and on a K 1600 GT those two figures are the whole basis of the decision.
Key Features
- A dry non-woven mat rather than a weave, closing to 14 microns
- A published flow rate of 1,800 l/m²/sec; no retention percentage is published for this medium
- Never oiled, so no film exists that could reach a sensor
- Roughly double the filtering surface of a typical performance panel
- Seats where the standard element sat, with no work on the airbox and no remapping
- Serviced with compressed air, specified to last the motorcycle, two-year warranty
Why the missing number matters less than it looks
A test run at 100 microns asks a question this material was not built to answer. Every dry medium in the range stops particles that size; the interesting differences live one and two orders of magnitude further down, where a mat closing to 14 microns and a cloth opening to 80 stop behaving alike. A percentage, had one been published, would mostly have confirmed the obvious. What separates the P14 from the standard element is printed instead: a non-woven material that holds particles through its thickness rather than at a single surface, and a flow rating around a third of the weave's.
What it changes on a GT
The behaviour of one consumable, and nothing besides. It adds no power — nothing dropped into an untouched airbox does — and with this medium the honest account has a second half: choosing it costs air. Where the 80 µm weave passes more than the engine ever asks for on the road, the mat passes less, and the gap becomes visible only where a wide throttle is held for long stretches. In return the machine gets a finer barrier that is cleaned and refitted instead of binned, holding its restriction steady across a service interval rather than drifting upward through it.
Care and cleaning
Air from the clean side, outwards, is the whole of routine maintenance for the PM187P14; the nozzle should never work from the face that collects the dirt. If a long dry spell has packed the surface tighter than air will clear, lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent will do it, followed by rinsing until the water carries nothing away. Then leave it alone in moving air until it is dry right through — heaters, ovens and flames destroy the material, and no shortcut is worth that — and refit it dry, with nothing applied to it. The Downloads tab holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW K 1600 GT built from 2010 to 2019, dropping into the standard airbox without modification. Ten model years sit behind that one part number and it does not change across them. Three further K 1600 variants share the same housing; all four appear with their spans under the Fitment tab.
