Spark builds four exhausts for the first-generation MT-09 platform. This is the only one you can register: catalyst retained, silenced box fitted, and a measured 93,5 dB against the standard bike's 93.
Key Features
- Complete system for the Yamaha MT-09, XSR 900 and Tracer 900 / GT, 2013 to 2020.
- AISI 304 stainless steel 3-into-1 collector with the catalytic converter retained.
- Silenced box ahead of the silencer — the part that carries the Euro 4 compliance.
- Grid-O silencer in full titanium, Moto2 design, low standard mounting.
- 5,3 kg against 8,4 kg standard: 3,1 kg saved.
- Spark supplies an EC homologation certificate with the system.
Half a Decibel Over Standard
Spark measured the standard MT-09 at 93 dB at 5.000 rpm and this system at 93,5. That is the whole difference on the meter, and it is the number that lets the exhaust carry a Euro 4 approval rather than a track-use disclaimer.
What it does not tell you is how the bike sounds, because a static reading and a character are different things. Spark's own description is worth repeating: extremely dark at low revs, with the resonance of the naturally aspirated triple left intact. The three-cylinder note is what people buy this engine for; the system is tuned to keep it rather than bury it.
The Box Is the Approval
Look under the engine and you will find a flat stainless chamber between the collector and the silencer. That box is not decoration and it is not a catalytic converter — the converter sits further forward, in the collector. The box is a pre-silencer, and it is where the noise reduction actually happens.
It is also what separates this article number from GYA8862T. The racing version of the same code deletes the box, fits a titanium link pipe in its place, and loses the approval with it. Everything else — collector, catalyst, silencer, mounting — is shared.
The Grid-O, and Why the Mesh
The silencer is full titanium with a perforated mesh end cap, the design Spark took to Moto2. The mesh is not a styling flourish: it is an outlet with a large open area spread over many small holes, which is a different way of managing the exit than a single large pipe.
It hangs in the low standard position, where Yamaha put the original, so nothing about the rear of the motorcycle changes — no re-routing, no relocated numberplate, no new bracketry visible from the side.
Three Kilos, and Where They Sit
8,4 kg becomes 5,3. Most of the loss is at the silencer, which is the mass furthest from the centre of the motorcycle, and on a bike as light and short as an MT-09 that is the fraction a rider actually notices in direction changes.
The racing systems for the same platform go further — 4,2 kg for GYA8870T, 2,4 kg for the full titanium GYA8874T — but they do it by removing the parts that make this one legal.
Installation
Spark publishes both a written installation instruction and a fitting video for this code, which is not the case for every system in the range. The standard catalytic converter is retained; the collector is built around it.
Fitment & Compatibility
Yamaha MT-09, XSR 900 and Tracer 900 / Tracer 900 GT, 2013 to 2020. The racing build of the same code is GYA8862T at 1.487 euro. The two full racing systems for this platform are GYA8870T and the full titanium GYA8874T.
Road Approval
EC type-approved. Spark's price list marks the entry with an asterisk: the certificate covers a defined range of model years and emission classes rather than the whole model line. Ask us for the certificate and check it against your registration document before riding on public roads.
