DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 08762-40 is a pair of fork springs rated at 4.0 N/mm, 465 mm long with a 43.0 mm inner diameter. Too stiff and the front loses feel over bumps; too soft and it dives under the brakes. Rate sets that balance.

Key Features

  • 300 mm of usable stroke
  • Free length 465 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 4.0 N/mm
  • Öhlins part number 08762-40
  • Inner diameter 43.0 mm
  • Supplied as a pair

How Öhlins Makes Them

The unit is rebuildable: seals, shims and oil are catalogue items, not a reason to buy a new one. The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 43.0 mm × 465 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 4.0 N/mm.

Choosing 4.0 N/mm

A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. Soft rates like this are what off-road and adventure forks need: the wheel has to follow the ground, not deflect off it. Expect more sag and more movement — that is the point, not a fault. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.

What Fitting Involves

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. The job needs no special tools beyond a fork spring compressor and a measuring rod for the oil level.

Road Approval

Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
