The Most Successful Motorcycle BMW Makes
For years the large GS has outsold every other big-capacity motorcycle in Europe by a comfortable margin, and the 1250 extended that. It is bought by riders who will take it around the world and by riders who will take it to a cafe on Sunday, and it does both without embarrassing either of them.
Why the Badge Suits This One
On a bike that is unmistakably a GS from fifty metres, milling the letters into the throttle housing is a continuation rather than an announcement. It is the same logic that puts the designation on the tank flanks and the cylinder head covers. The alternative unlettered housing exists and is equally correct; this is the version for owners who like the consistency.
Machining Rather Than Moulding
The body is cut from a single billet of Ergal 7075, which is what allows the lettering to be part of the component instead of a surface treatment. It also means there is no joint across the assembly, no clips to work loose under the boxer's characteristic low-frequency pulse, and no moulded seam for water to find.
What It Replaces
The original BMW part is the throttle housing with the right-hand switches built into it. There is no way to renew one without the other, and the complete assembly is not cheap. This unit takes over both jobs and plugs into the standard connector, leaving the electronics untouched.
