Framed as a replacement this is a difficult purchase for an R nineT. Framed as a second element it is a straightforward one. Both weaves are the same panel in the same housing, so an owner can hold both and change them in the time it takes to unclip the airbox lid: the standard cloth for the season, PM213S F1-85 for a track day or a set of timed runs, and back again on the Monday. That is the shape in which the openest of the three media makes sense on a road bike.
Key Features
- 85-micron dry polyester, the openest medium listed for this box
- 15,000 l/m²/sec of rated flow, around three times the standard element's
- Same series airbox as the standard panel, so the two are interchangeable
- Never oiled, so swapping media leaves nothing behind in the tract
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a typical performance element
- Washed and reused indefinitely, two years of warranty from purchase
Why holding both is the sensible form
Because the two elements answer different questions and neither answer is right all year. The open weave is built for a demand an R nineT meets on a handful of days a year and never on a commute. On every other day the closer weave is the better tool, holding back more of the fine fraction on roads that supply it. Keeping one of each removes the need to choose once and live with it, and because both drop into the unmodified box the change costs a few minutes and no parts.
What the swap does not require
No mapping work, no fuelling change, no modification to the housing and nothing to undo afterwards. Worth stating plainly, because the accessory market around this model is full of intake parts that require all of it. An element inside the series airbox leaves the machine's specification where it was, which is also why nobody should expect the bike to feel stronger: a standard R nineT with a racing weave in the box is a standard R nineT. What changes is what the box will pass when something downstream finally asks for it.
Care and cleaning
Both elements are looked after the same way, which makes running a pair simple. Compressed air on the clean face of the PM213S F1-85, blown outward so the dust leaves by the route it entered, never from the dirty side. Water and a mild detergent when air is not enough, rinsed clear. Then air-drying at room temperature as long as it takes, because heat — a gun, a radiator, a flame — is what actually finishes one of these, not the road. Store the element that is out of the bike dry and flat; refit the other unoiled. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R nineT of 2021 to 2024, the roadster's closing years, in the standard airbox, unmodified. Three machines are listed: this R nineT and the R12 and R12 nineT of 2025 and 2026, which use the same housing. Older and adjacent R nineTs do not. The 2014 to 2016 roadster is on a separate number, and so is the R nineT Scrambler for its whole run, 2021 to 2024 included: two machines can wear the same name in the same year and take different filters. The Fitment tab names all three.
