A motorcycle in its first model year has no aftermarket. There are no exhausts on the shelf, no seat options, no accessory catalogue worth the name — and for an owner who wants to change something, that is a short list. The airbox is the exception: a filter element exists for the 820 RR from the start, because it is dimensioned to a housing rather than developed around a market.

The one part that does not wait

Most aftermarket parts arrive a year or two after a model does, once volumes justify the tooling. A filter is different because the work is measurement, not development: the panel matches the airbox and the medium is the same material Sprint Filter supplies across the range. So the first thing an 820 RR owner can genuinely change is also one of the few with an argument behind it that does not involve noise or paint. It is worth adding what the argument is not: this element is not a tuning part, and the standard airbox stays exactly as the factory drew it — same volume, same intake path, same map.

What it is and is not

It is a lower and, across the service interval, steadier intake restriction, plus a part that is cleaned rather than consumed. It is not power. In an unmodified airbox the PM291S leaves a standard 820 RR exactly as strong as it was, and any element that claimed otherwise would be describing a different machine. On a bike with no service history yet, the second half of that sentence is the useful half: this is the component you will be taking out and inspecting, and it survives being inspected.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air on the clean face of the PM291S, worked outwards, handles routine service. When the weave stays grey after that, lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes it; rinse until the water runs off clear. Drying is done in moving air at room temperature only — heat guns, radiators and flames damage the medium before the damage shows. Refit it dry, with nothing applied.
