The Rivale never decided what it was, and that was deliberate — wide bars and long travel like a supermoto, a 798 cc triple like a sportbike, a riding position that suits a commute and folding mirrors for the ones you take through traffic. One bike, four duty cycles, and each of them loads the air filter differently. That is a genuinely useful thing to know when choosing an element, because a filter sized for one of them is compromised on the others. The Sprint Filter P08 CM135S starts from a lower restriction on all four.

Four ways to load a filter

Commuting loads it slowly and invisibly with traffic particulate. A fast road ride puts it under high transient flow. A day on gravel throws a season of dust at it in an afternoon. Sitting in summer traffic runs the airbox hot. Paper handles all four the same way — it loads, and it stays loaded. Twice the filtering surface delays every one of them, and a washable medium reverses them, which is the only sensible answer for a bike that genuinely gets used in all four ways.

The gravel argument against oil

An oiled cotton element traps dust well because the dust sticks to the oil, and then the oil migrates when the airbox runs warm — downstream, to where the sensors are. A dry element removes that mechanism rather than reducing its odds, and it needs no re-oiling step in which too much can be applied.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean side outwards. For a deeper clean, wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear, and dry fully in air — never with heat, never with a flame. Refit dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
