The facts.
DescriptionThe whole story▼
People who buy dual-sport motorcycles are, as a rule, people who set off without consulting the forecast. Water therefore reaches the intake far more often than anybody plans for: thrown up as spray from a wet surface, hanging about as mist after a shower has passed, or simply sitting in the air on a cold morning that never quite dries out. Every bike ridden in real weather meets this. What differs between them is what the filter medium does about it afterwards.
Key Features
- Polyester thread, which takes on surface water and then sheds it again
- Washing is the specified deep-clean, not an accident to be avoided
- An 80-micron aperture that is the same aperture after drying as before
- Direct exchange inside the standard airbox; no modification, no recalibration
- Roughly double the filtering area of a conventional performance panel
- Two years of manufacturer cover, beginning on the purchase date
Cellulose takes water on and keeps it
Paper absorbs; that is what paper is for. An element that has been through a wet week swells where the pleats fold, and the swelling narrows exactly the passages the filter is rated by. When it dries out it does not resume the shape it started with, so repeating that cycle across a season leaves the panel permanently more restrictive than the day it went in, without it ever having been particularly dirty. No fault code accompanies this. The engine simply pulls a shade less willingly in April than it did in September, and most riders put that down to the weather having changed.
The medium that can be put under a tap on purpose
The CM170S is woven from polyester filaments of ø 22 microns and upwards, and it is not hygroscopic in the way cellulose is. It gets wet, it dries, and the geometry afterwards matches the geometry before — which is precisely why washing it is a maintenance operation rather than a destructive one. That single property is what turns a filter from a consumable into a component: the wet ride that would have quietly ruined a paper cartridge is, for this panel, simply an argument for doing the deep No element makes a standard Granpasso R stronger, this one included; it simply declines to get quietly worse across a wet season.
Care and cleaning
Ordinary servicing is compressed air applied to the clean face and worked outwards. The wash is lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed as many times as it takes for the water to come away without colour. Then dry it fully in still room air, and be strict about it: no heat gun, no radiator, no flame, no hot engine — a warm shortcut deforms the weave permanently and leaves no evidence. It is refitted dry, with nothing applied afterwards. Sprint Filter's procedure is available under Downloads.
