The frame of the filter is what closes that assembly, and it has to be stiff enough to hold its shape against the pressure the engine puts on it and yielding enough at the sealing face to take up the small irregularities of a moulded plastic housing. Seen that way, a direct-fit element is not a convenience feature but the precondition for the rest of the specification. Lift the old element out, wipe any loose dirt from the airbox floor so it cannot be drawn in afterwards, and seat the P08 with the sealing face square all the way round before the cover goes back on. Run a finger round the edge; if it sits evenly, the job is done. That is also the right moment to be honest about what has changed, because the engine will not make more power for it.
