The name comes from a hill climb that finishes above four thousand metres, and it is a useful reminder of something most Multistrada owners never think about. Air thins as you climb: to make the same power an engine must draw a greater volume of it, and everything in the intake path is asked to pass more for the same result. Anyone riding high Alpine passes is in a gentler version of the same situation. PM127S gives that path close to double the filtering area, which is precisely the property that counts when each litre of air is worth less.

Thin air asks for more volume
The injection compensates for altitude by metering less fuel, which keeps the mixture correct and costs power that no filter can give back. What is avoidable is the extra loss to a panel that has silted up over a summer. Restriction rises with the volume passing through the cloth, and at height the engine is passing more of it for the same output, on roads that also ask for long stretches of open throttle. The two effects push in the same direction and they arrive together, on exactly the ride this version was bought for.
Bought for the good roads
The Pikes Peak was the Multistrada with the serious suspension and the sharper ergonomics — the one chosen to be ridden rather than commuted. Altitude is not undone by a filter, and neither is the power curve rewritten by one. Keeping the intake at the restriction Ducati designed around is simply worth more on a bike used this way than on one that spends its life in traffic, because this one is asked for everything more often.
Care and cleaning
A blast of compressed air on the inner face, worked outward, deals with ordinary dust. Once or twice in the element's life that will not do, and then it wants hand-warm water, a small amount of mild detergent and a rinse until the run-off is clear. Drying happens in air and nowhere else: no heater, no hot-air gun, no flame. It is refitted dry, because there is nothing to reapply. Sprint Filter's care sheet can be found in the Downloads tab.
