How Öhlins Makes Them
The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.
Size and Rate
The 57 mm bore and 270 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 60 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.
What This Rate Does
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
How a Rear Spring Works
The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every setting a compromise. A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. Rear spring rates run in the tens or hundreds of N/mm because the spring sits at the short end of that lever, not at the wheel.
Applications
The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.
Installation
Springs are supplied ready to fit; no cutting, grinding or packing is needed. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.
Road Approval
Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.
