Why the Rate Holds
Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

Where This Rate Belongs
From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. This is where most riders of average weight land once static sag has been set to specification. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.
Installation
Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops.
Road Approval
Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.
