DescriptionThe whole story▼
Öhlins part number 06774-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30 N/mm, 320 mm long with a 70 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.
Key Features
- Measured spring rate 30 N/mm
- 204 mm of usable stroke
- Free length 320 mm
- Öhlins part number 06774-03
- Straight-wound, constant rate
- Inner diameter 70 mm
- Powder-coated yellow
Why the Rate Holds
Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted.
The Numbers That Matter
Dimensionally this is a 70 mm × 320 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 30 N/mm.
Where This Rate Belongs
A soft rate favours grip and comfort over support: the fork moves early, which keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
What the Rear Spring Decides
A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it.
Applications
There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider?
Installation
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
Fitting and Setup Service
Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
