Why the Rate Holds
Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate.
The Numbers That Matter

What This Rate Does
Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.
Rate and the Linkage
Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. On a linkage-equipped machine the wheel moves several millimetres for every millimetre the damper moves, and the spring rate has to account for that ratio. Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect.
Applications
Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Selection is by measurement. If the diameter and free length match your fork, the remaining question is the rate. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits.
Fitting
Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.
Road Approval
Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.
