Why the Rate Holds
Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The Öhlins part number is stamped on the unit, so its specification can be looked up years later.

Where This Rate Belongs
Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.
Rate and the Linkage
Progressive springs change rate through the stroke, which suits machines with little travel and a lot of load. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks.
Applications
A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork. If you are replacing a sagged original, measure its free length first — a tired spring often measures several millimetres short.
Fitting
If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil.
Road Approval
Road approval: none is issued for springs as such — they replace an existing component of the same function. Any model-specific approval is listed under Applications.
Fitting and Setup Service
We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
